What are your team’s top achievements from the GBLA project?
Our team's top achievement from the GBLA project was our immigration fair. Our immigration fair was a top achievement because this was a way we were able to give back to our community. Not only that but we were also able to give people important advice about misconceptions, another things that many immigrants many not have known about.
What evidence have you collected to share (use of data)?
The evidence that we connected was the amount of people who came, what people thought about the immigration fair, and whether people found the fair useful.
What are the short term outcomes (qualitative and quantitative) to affect change in the community or with the students?
Short term outcome was that we were able to inform people about immigrant and DACA issues, and their rights through our immigration fair. 25 people came to our immigration fair, where they were able to talk to lawyers, and learn about English classes, naturalization and many more topics. Most of the feedback we got was positive and we were able to see people leave the fair more informed about their rights. For example Cesar Rugama who attended the immigration fair said, "It was a great experience going to Girls Build LA meet mainly because I was able to learn more about what an immigrant can do in the United States. I received many papers that gave me a lot of directions on how I can receive scholarships as well as get my U.S. citizenship. The girls were really nice at the event and they even brought me a lawyer to show me the way." The immigration fair was also a success because we were able to partner with Ferias Legales where they were able to get a lawyer to talk to the people who attended the immigration fair free of charge. Overall a short term outcome was that we motivated people to learn about their rights and why it is important for them to know about their rights.
What will be in the long term outcomes to the community?
The long term outcome of this is that we were able to teach people about their rights. This is a long term outcome because know if people are ever in a tight situation they will be able to their rights which can aid them in the legal process or if they are in danger of being deported.
